Foster Information

While our ultimate goal is adoption for every dog we bring into the rescue, the most important role in the rescue is that of the foster family. Since we do not have a kennel, each dog that we take in is placed with a foster family. The foster family is responsible for the care, socialization, and training of the rescued dog to prepare it for its forever home. As a foster, you will teach dogs who may have been let down by their previous owners that humans are not all bad and that we are here to give them a second chance at a happy life. You will help shy dogs learn that it's okay to explore the world; you will help fearful dogs learn that people, places, and other dogs can be safe; you will make unwanted dogs feel wanted and loved again and become ready to be a part of someone's family. It's not always an easy job, but it is a very important job and one that we take very seriously.

Adopt A Pit provides you with everything you need to foster a rescued dog. You will be provided with a crate, collar, food, and any necessary medications for your rescued dog. We provide all medical care and vetting for your foster dog. We provide you with instructions and guidance to help you reintroduce your rescued dog to what a dog's life should be. As a new foster you will not be given more than you can handle. We never expect fosters to take on aggressive dogs. If you are uncomfortable with your rescued dog's behavior, our Foster Counselors and Support Team are available to discuss your concerns and work through them with you. You will also have access to our team of fosters who are available to offer guidance and advice to help you every step of the way. You will never be alone. We want fostering to be a rewarding experience - for both you and the dog!

Our foster families will tell you that fostering is a very fulfilling experience. You are not just providing a transitional home for a dog - you are literally saving a life. The majority of the dogs we foster are pulled from high-kill shelters and we are asked to take them because they are deemed "unadoptable" for a variety of reasons - illness, injury, because they are scared, and unfortunately, because of their breed. We take the dogs that other rescues won't - the medical cases, the old, the dogs that may take a long time to get adopted. We pull them right before their time is up. Often times if we don't take them, they will die. We are truly their last chance.

The requirements for fosters are similar to those of adopters:

  • All dogs in the home must be spayed or neutered.
  • All dogs in the home must be current on all age appropriate vaccinations.
  • All dogs in the home must be on regular, year-round heartworm preventative.
  • We may require the same of other pets in the home at our discretion.
  • We will contact your vet to confirm the above.
  • If you rent, we will contact your landlord to verify your ability to have a dog, and any restrictions on breed or size.
  • We require that you fill out an application and be completely honest on the application.
  • We do not require a fence, but ask about it in our application.
  • We will visit your home to make sure it is a suitable environment for our dog.
  • Fosters must be within a reasonable distance from our veterinarian in Germantown, OH.
  • Fosters must be willing and able to transport their foster dog to and from regular appointments, adoption events, and adoption meet & greets.
  • Foster must sign a foster contract and agree to abide by all Adopt A Pit Rescue rules regarding their foster dog, including utilization of a crate when the dog is unsupervised.

Here's what some of our fosters have said about their experience with Adopt A Pit:

"She's special to us. From the first night we got her to last night. It's rewarding to put in so much effort with a dog and see this. The puppy and Elaine...those two were easy. Dany was not. She made us work. But it was worth it. She is honestly the reason we want to keep fostering.  I really do love this." -JL

"Fostering is the best thing I have ever done. You take in a dog that is terrified, unsocialized, who has been mistreated in the worst ways, and you show them love and you watch them blossom and it fills your heart with such joy. People ask me 'how do you do it? How do you give them up?' I won't say it's easy, but I'm always happy for them when they find their forever home. I know that my role is to turn them into what they should have been from the start. I am not their forever - I am just a waypoint. I'm here to make them whole. I wouldn't trade that for anything." - AB
